VEJA ~ VEJA ~ VEJA

Ruben:
I’ve been following your instagram @raaamps for a few years now and I've always loved your graphics and been generally intrigued by your brand.
Where and when did Ramps start and tell us about what you are all about?
Ramps:
RAMPS started in London 2016. Hand printing on vintage Nike and Adi sweats that would get hung out and left for people to find. Hanging on lampposts / bridges / fences etc. I’ve always been drawn to that DIY aesthetic that you get with street art / paste ups. I guess this was a way of expressing that through clothing.
Ruben:
I was instantly drawn to the name RAMPS as I grew up skateboarding, but is the brand name a skateboard ramp reference or something else?
Ramps:
The name was a reference to youth rather than skateboarding in particular. The street I grew up on was a hill and we would always build ramps at the bottom of it. Jumping off them on bikes, skateboards, radio controlled cars - anything that would go up them. Riding a bike was fun. Building a ramp and jumping over it on your bike was much more fun.
Ruben:
Do you still design and screen print all the tee’s yourself?
Ramps:
Design is all done in house yes - the only exception to that being collabs or artist editions. I’d say I print less than I used to as the brand is growing. I like to do the one off vintage over prints myself still and then get the pros to do the bigger runs.
Ruben:
What inspires you and your designs?
Ramps:
All sorts - I like old Japanese zines and books, record covers, vintage tees. I generally try to make a few designs that you wouldn’t usually see anywhere else. A huge pixelated wetsuit balaclava for instance.
Ruben:
What are ya future plans for 2022 and beyond?
Ramps:
Mixtapes, more tee’s and some exciting collabs...
Ruben:
I noticed a few music references and the turntable mats you have produced (I should have ordered those! Duh!) that’s your DJ name and what's currently in your music rotation?
Ramps:
DJ name is RAMPS - my music rotation is pretty eclectic dance floor clearing stuff. Jazz, heavy heavy D&B, leftfield techno, trip hop, breaks. Listening to a lot of Trilogy Tapes, Youth, old DJ Shadow, Fabio and Grooveriders rinse FM show always gets an airing!
Ruben:
Who's your favourite New Zealander and why?...
