Combining utilitarianism with a strong respect for nature and pacifist beliefs, maharishi creates technically superior garments made from natural fibres sourced and produced ethically - and although these sentiments may seem the norm in 2018, they were absolutely trailblazing back in the mid-90s. Maharishi fan/award-winning director/writer Paul Black spoke with Blechman back in 2015, stating that the designer’s ‘love of hemp led him to develop the first waterproof hemp clothes with the Italian mill ITS Artea… Together, Hardy and ITS developed hemp bases with PU coatings that gave performance, whilst being 95% natural fibre’.
Although he is widely regarded as an expert of militaria with experience in the international military and industrial clothing surplus trade, Blechman - and maharishi - is decidedly pacifist. As stated on the window of the maharishi flagship store in London, the brand ‘aims to convey a strong anti-war sentiment through its use of camouflage - reclaiming its symbolic value away from war, back to its roots in nature and development by artists and to highlight objections to continued 21st century warfare’. In fact, Blechman co-authored a book on Disruptive Pattern Material - aka camouflage - back in 2004, looking in depth at the sociopolitical and aesthetic histories of the design.
Throughout the late 2000’s and early 2010’s, maharishi’s public and financial success receded somewhat, and they briefly stopped producing women’s wear. But fast-forward to 2018 and maharishi is back in the spot light, collaborating with the likes of Travis Scott. Having endured an influx of imitators and a streetwear boom, maharishi has survived unscathed. With a 24 year history of sustainable practices and a stringent set of core values that run through its entire output, maharishi manage to consistently innovate, whether through utilitarian stylings, new ethical materials, or wide-spread sources of inspiration.
