As the 90s rolled around, so did the New Balance 997. Designed by Steven Smith, the 997’s crisp midsole, jacked-up heel height and slick proportions quickly cultivated a cult following.
The 99x family had previously used exposed die-cut EVA midsoles, but the 997 ditched this in favour of a radical Polyurethane shell that housed dual-density ENCAP inserts. A chunk of pliable C-CAP ran from the toe through to the mid foot, with removable arch supports completing the cushioning quartet. There are heaps of other carefully researched, number heavy details that are unique to the 997, and as Steven Smith recalls; ‘Sometimes the features designed for performance end up becoming the iconic part people remember the most!’
Nevertheless, hindsight’s a bitch, and in 1994 the 997 was officially retired from production, leaving many enthusiasts thirsty for more. Since then there have been a few unexpected resurrections; in late 2008, a Frankenstein model known as the 997.5 combined the 997 upper with the ANZORB-enhanced 998 sole unit. Another 997.5 release in 2011 kept people wondering, but it wasn’t till a public lobbying campaign and infamous ‘Bring it back!’ petition that the rumours really began to swirl. Finally, in January 2014, New Balance announced the return of the OG ‘Made in USA’ 997.
Fast-forward to 2019 with the recent 997S release, we’re lucky enough to be getting a brand new iteration of the 997. The New Balance 997H is the result of careful design and research, using GCEVA and a modernised outsole profile for an even lighter, whippier ride.

Returns & Refunds
Full price purchases placed online are eligible to be returned for an exchange, store credit, or refund providing your returns items fit our returns policy conditions outlined below if you contact us within 48 hours of receiving your order.
Contact must be made via [email protected] within 48 hours of receiving the goods advising us of return.
Returned Items must be unused, with the original tags & packaging still attached to the product. All footwear must be returned in the original shoe box, sunglasses and jewellery in the original case & box.
Shipping and handling is non refundable and returns are the customers responsibility until they reach Good as Gold Ltd.
