We take a look at the 1960's sneaker and why it's so popular.

The History Of The Adidas Gazelle

The adidas Originals Gazelle is arguably one of the most iconic sneakers made by the three stripes, it has a long history that goes back to the 60's. Its simple build, branding and shape have made the sneaker loved by many with the ability to make the shoe the final touch of any outfit.

Of course the Gazelle began in sports, originating on the track with athletics the shoe was then built for football in West Germany and tested with top handball players which resulted the potential of the Gazelle becoming a more multi-purpose footwear option. The Gazelle was the first adidas shoe to be made from suede which at the time was kangaroo velour, this was a major switch from the majority of sportswear sneakers being produced in leather. Suede introduced more logical benefits such as the weight being much lighter while still providing a high level of comfort and protection. As the 1970's rolled around the Gazelle was one of the best sellers for adidas allowing them to introduce various colours, outsole options and added features such as the soft heel tab and a forming tongue. In 1972 the sneaker added a feature we still see today which is the hexagonal sole.

Today the adidas Gazelle remains an iconic sneaker of the ages that is just as multi-purpose as it was back in the 60's. With variations of colours, collaborations and material options the Gazelle remains a great blank canvas for the brand allowing an expanded offering like no other.
