Pop Trading Co has finally made it's way to GAG, a brand that we've had our eyes on for a long time. Founded in 2013 by Peter Kolks and Ric van Rest. Pop Trading Company is renowned as the best skate brand to come out of Amsterdam. Inspired by the city's skate culture and the local community in Benelux the brand continually establishes a refined aesthetic, focused on shaping today’s field of skateboarding on their own terms.
Growing up in the 90's during Skateboardings entry into pop-culture is where Ric and Peter drew their inspiration from, however POP's approach to design is far removed from the early skate aesthetic on the reliance of graphic tee's. Instead they push for a more refined approach. The two felt as though there was a gap in the market for a toned down skate aesthetic that can be worn by the die hard skaters, and for those that don't skate as well. "Pop Trading Company is Ric Van Rest, me and our team, trying to do a more considerate version of a skateboard apparel brand. Like a menswear-inspired skate brand; or the other way around. Selfishly, it’s just what we both like as we grow older."
Starting out as a distributor for brands such as Palace, Polar Skate Co. and Quartersnacks, the duo’s goals grew after Kolks had the idea of opening a boutique style skate shop that sold a variety of menswear brands, all in the aspiration of supporting the skate community in Benelux. For the duo, it wasn't so much a business as it was a hobbie, like most skate brands - a bunch of friends just doing what they love. Having their own skate team of 20 riders POP puts out a lot of skate content with monthly Video Edits and publications for multiple magazines.
The name POP Trading Co. (Sadly not just 'POP' for legal reasons) is inspired by skating itself. "‘Pop’ can be interpreted in multiple ways but in our case it references popping your skateboard. If you have a good snap and you can jump high, you have good pop. If you have a fresh new board it has good pop. As we started out 6 or 7 years ago distributing brands like Palace and Polar, we were wholesaling boards, or in other words, Trading in Pop…"
It wasn't until later that POP would start producing their own clothing line. In 2016 Palace decided to pull back their distribution of apparel globally - needing to fill the gap, Peter Kolk's father; who also happened to be the book keeper, suggested the two start their own brand, with everything already in place it was a natural progression. Their good friend and renowned Amsterdam artist Piet Parra agreed and told them he loved what they were doing and connected the two of them with his factories. AW16 was the first season of POP and they've been getting better ever since, getting picked up by iconic stores such as Civilist Berlin, Supreme, Slam City Skates, and now GAG.
Since the creation of their own line of apparel POP has gone on to collaborate with some pretty incredible brands; Vans, Mr Porter, Carharrt, iconic Dutch character Miffy, and Piet Parra, just to name a few. They've also gone on to become the first ever skate brand to show at Paris Fashion Week.
POP's been a brand we've been watching for years, and we're now stoked to add it to the line up.
