A new canvas for the 2002R

Bryant Giles for New Balance

There really is no better time than now to be a fan of New Balance. With Teddy Santis at the helm of Made in USA, the brand is undergoing a renaissance of sorts, with release after release flying off shelves and touching down on the secondary market in the blink of an eye.

For its latest release, New Balance has teamed up with LA-based artist and designer Bryant Giles for 2 new renditions of the 2002R.

Having showcased his work at various contemporary art galleries throughout the late 2010s and ultimately landing a shoe collaboration with Nike, Giles has made a name for himself as a versatile and enigmatic man of his craft.

Giles, who's work heavily features a mix of bodies and objects, or even body-as-objects, it comes to no surprise that his collaboration with New Balance would feature these illustrations.

Comprising an olive green canvas upper, the first sneaker (M2002RAG) features embroidered drawings in a variety of colours, including yellow and pink.

Stitched on the heel, "What Now?" typography nods to Giles' 'What Now' film, which debuted in December 2021 during Miami's Art Basel events. Meanwhile, frayed edges and velcro patch branding completed the look of Giles' art-infused 2002Rs.

The second iteration (M2002RM1) of Giles' collaboration comes in the form of a mule.

Sporting a laceless design, the mules feature durable canvas, suede, and mesh uppers with colourful illustrations of facial features seen from different angles.

Distinct elements of the shoe include a perforated suede panel and an oval-shaped New Balance Running logo in place of the traditional lace unit. Rounding out the design are NB’s classic NERGY soles equipped with ABZORB SBS cushioning.
