Salehe Bembury "Water Be The Guide" ML2002RJ

New Balance are quietly taking over the world. Their releases are taking them from strength to strength. Luckily for us, and you, and just everyone, the Boston-based brand isn't slowing down anytime soon.

Last year Salehe Bembury was named “Footwear Designer of the Year” which is no small feet. But also no surprise for someone who’s resume is damn impressive: Former Vice President of Sneakers and Men’s Footwear at Versace and working alongside Kanye on multiple YEEZY boots.

Yet we are here to discuss Salehe Bembury and New Balance. Bembury has been teasing his ML2002RJ collaboration since earlier this year off the back of his ‘Peace Be The Journey’ collaboration from last year. The new sneaker goes under the theme ‘Water Be The Guide’ following the nature theme.

Inspired by Arizona’s Havasu Falls, the sneakers feature aquatic blue and rusty orange to represent the contrasting natural warm and cool tones of the falls. Not only are there juxtaposed colours, the materials also clash with hairy suede, leather and mesh. The mesh, which follows up the tongue is a light muted orange representing the cliffs which frame the Havasu Falls, and the contrasting aquatic blue suede can be understood as the rushing water. The neon green ‘N’ is the sparse springy bush which frames the banks of the falls. The shape of the sneaker combines the upper of the New Balance 2002 and the outsole of the 860v2.
