Keen calls it Consciously Created, a promise to make the world's cleanest shoes, one decision at a time.
That means eliminating harmful chemistries most brands haven't even started phasing out: PFAS-free since 2018, flame-retardant-free since 2003, and years ahead of the industry on removing "forever chemicals" from footwear altogether.
Keen was among the first footwear brands to eliminate intentionally added PFAS, avoiding over 230,000 lbs of it since 2014, and today keeps shoes free of antimicrobials and, in 98% of cases, bisphenols and phthalates too.
Harvest Materials
Keen tries to take less from the planet with everything it makes, harvesting waste and upcycling it into comfortable, durable footwear.
Fewer resources, less garbage, right down to the box it ships in: Keen packaging is made with 99% recycled cardboard and 92 to 100% recycled tissue paper.
Sourced Ethically
Every step of the shoemaking process matters, from the factory floor to the tannery. Keen sources its leather & suede only from Leather Working Group certified tanneries, with 100% rated at the highest gold level in 2025 for water use, chemical management, and environmental standards.
Since Spring 2023, Keen has also banned Brazilian hides outright, cutting off any link between its supply chain and Amazon deforestation.
Detox the Planet
Cleaner materials need cleaner construction. Keen developed a technique called Keen.Fusion which fuses the upper and sole without glues or solvents, cutting harmful chemical use while making the shoe more durable in the process.
