Grey Day celebrates the most quintessential New Balance shoe ever - the grey suede 574. The Boston-based sneaker brand is well-known for many reasons but most iconically for the 574. The grey 574 is arguably one of the most timeless sneakers in the world, it's status is firmly held within anybody’s sneaker rotation. If you don’t have a thrashed pair of 574’s sitting at home, listen up!
In line With Grey Day this year, New Balance have created a pretty incredible campaign that promotes everything the 574 represents. At first the 574 was designed as a technical running shoe by Steven Smith (designer of NB 1500, Reebok InstaPump Fury and Yeezy), as a ‘mix’ of two previous models, the 577 and 576. Not unexpectedly, the 574 gained popularity outside of the running scene becoming a lifestyle shoe enjoyed by absolutely everyone.
Smith had left New Balance before the release of the 574, but he could see his design become a part of pop culture after Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest rapped You wanna diss the Phifer but you still don’t know the half, I sport New Balance sneakers to avoid a narrow path. Since then, the 574 model has been synonymous with New Balance, so much so that it deserves a holiday.
What's a holiday without a gift? This years ‘Grey Day’ gifts are two new silhouettes. The first silhouette dubbed as the ‘Un-N-Ding’ takes the original 574 silhouette and loses the signature ‘N’ on the side of the shoe. The second silhouette is the 57/40, an updated version of the 574, taking a chunkier sole than the original for an updated contemporary bulky vibe.
GAG is stoked to be releasing both silhouettes on May the 15th. So you best chuck on your 574’s and stroll down to 20 Bond street or jump online this Saturday as every New Balance purchase will receive a free gift.
